A Little Wedding Tip Goes A Long Way

Although it may be more convenient to get another person to plan your wedding for you, organizing your own wedding may be far more fulfilling. More of your ideas come into play, and you will get the result that you worked so hard for.

You might be surprised at how much work planning a dream wedding can be. Forewarned is well armed, my grandmother used to say, and you’ll need all the help you can get.

Here are a few tips to help you plan yours:

Before it all starts, talk.

If there is one thing that’s sure to ruin a great day, it’s an unnecessary argument. Talk it over with your fiancé: How much do you intend to spend on your wedding, and who will foot what? Financials may not be very romantic, but need to be straightened out to prevent confusion six to twelve months from now. Discuss your ideas and whatever expectations you both may have about the day itself and after it; don’t forget to write them down, as these ideas can make your wedding extra special.

Location, location, location!

Where do you want to hold your wedding, and your wedding reception? You need to shop around for the perfect location and book it months ahead; you don’t want to have to look for another place if your perfect location was booked solid only a week ago. There are a lot of couples wanting to get married, after all.

Food, glorious food!

Food is an essential part of any celebration. Do you want a buffet, or a sit down dinner? Check out caterers’ menus and meal plans, and attend taste tests. Good food can make an already joyous occasion into an even happier one. If you book months ahead, caterers might even give you a discount.

Double-check with the caterers if they also do wedding cakes, or if they can recommend a reputable one. You can choose from traditional, multi-tiered, French style wedding cakes, or you can specify your own.

Flower power.

Look for a good florist. Even if you don’t intend to deck the place with flowers, well-placed thoughtful arrangements can change the room into a livelier one. Make sure to visit the florist in his shop; he will have several arrangements on display. You can then decide whether you like his touch.

Don’t forget to enroll in the Bridal Registry.

The Bridal Registry is an excellent way of letting guests know which items you and your fiancé need and would like to have. Having a registry also limits duplicate presents as the shop keeps track of which items have already been sold. Most shops keep a Bridal Registry, so just direct your friends to the shop where you enrolled.

Something old, something new…

You should start fitting for your wedding dress at least a month before the Day, especially if you choose to have it custom-made as some people do. Now would be a good time to coordinate bridesmaids’ outfits as well. This will give the tailors ample time for alterations, should there be any.

Create an Emergency Kit.

You never know what might come up on the day of your wedding itself, and when that happens there might not be enough time for a proper replacement. Make sure it has essentials like extra makeup, nylons and socks, a small sewing kit, pins and tape. Keep it handy – you just might need it!

These are just a few tips to help you plan the perfect wedding. But remember: In the end, what truly matters is that you both enjoy the beginning of your new life together. Best wishes!
